Conservation and
restoration treatments.
Conservation treatments are treatments
which are undertaken on the object itself and which are necessary
to guarantee the survival of the object itself in the future. Mostly
conservation treatments are an integral part of an overall conservation
and restoration initiative. After conservation objects should be
preserved adequately in efficient storage conditions using adequate
storage materials.
Restoration takes us a step further.
Whereas the paper of a bindingless book can perfectly be conserved
without the book being rebound, restoration involves the addition
of a new binding. Also a stained print can perfectly be conserved
without taking away the stains. Removing the stains by bleaching
resorts under restoration because it is not necessary for the survival
of the object, but relates more to the original character of the
print.
Which conservation treatments are executed
depends from different factors:
- Kind of object involved
- Condition of the object
- Use and handling of the object afterwards
- Following preservation measures and storage
conditions
