Preservation projects.
Sometimes a Global Survey or a Screening
of the collection leads to the conclusion that specific preservation
projects should be undertaken to preserve the collection or part
of it .
These projects, mostly part of an overall
preservation management policy can be implemented on short- or long-term
notice, depending on:
- Urgency of the project
- Skills and availability of the necessary
personnel
- Financial and structural means
In some instances collection items
can be subject to degradation that can be limited by constructing
preservation enclosures such as phase-boxes or bookshoes,
or storing items under different conditions. The urgency of
the project depends on how acute the situation is. For example
very friable material should be enclosed as soon as possible.
Preservation projects can of course
only be executed when sufficient funds are available for tools,
materials and logistic support. Enough and adequate space
will be necessary.
To execute a preservation project,
personnel skilled for the jobis necessary. Not only do these
people need the necessary skills. They also have to be meticulous
and aware of the responsability they have in executing the
project.
