Building assessment
and advice.
The best reason for building assessment
is concern with the possible dangers that emanate from a building
which is not conform to preservation purposes.
Other instances in which building assessment
is requested by the people responsible is when some structural or
technical malfunction occurs, such as a leak in the roof, overflowing
of sewers, etcŠ
Building assessment can be initiated
as a separate initiative, without assessment of the physical condition
of the collections. It will however always be integrated, when a
Global Survey is being requested.
A building assessment takes in account
- Location of the building
- Structural condition of the building
- Technical installations
Gathering of information is based on
- Investigation and measurements
- Collecting technical information
- Interviews with all people responsible
- Head archivist or head librarian
- Institution personnel
- Department technicians or technicians from
companies responsible for installation and maintenance.
One of the conclusions of this assessment
can be that the library or archive building in which the collections
are stored, show structural or technical shortcomings which can
endanger the collection it houses.
Based on this assessment, advice is given
concerning
- Relocation of the collection
- Renovation of the building
For some reasons it can be possible that
renovating the building is out of the question. One could consider
then to erect a new building.
Sometimes it is not possible to make
major changes to a building because it is historical or for some
other reason. In that case a comprise can mostly be worked out,
which may not be ideal but which minimizes dangers to the collection
as much as possible
