    • Physical condition of the collection and occuring deterioration
    • Storage and preservation materials
    • Inner transport
  • Use by the public
    • Handling of originals
    • Availability of copies
  • Conceptual frame of the institution
    • Aims of the institution
    • Financial means
    • Structural means
    • Personnel

Example of the Global Survey executed for the
    City of St. Niklaas.

Procedure

Because a Global Survey is based on a wide variety of information, gathering this information is an extensive part of the survey.
This is done by means of:

  • Investigation and measurements
  • Collecting technical folders and plans
  • Personal contact with
    • Head archivist or head librarian
    • Institution personnel
    • Personnel of technical services involved

It is our policy to involve institution personnel as much as possible for certain tasks regarding the survey. Tasks which can be carried out by institution personnel saves time and money for everyone.

After collecting the information the situation is analysed. Advice is subsequently written in a report which covers all abovementioned parameters. A priority list of actions to be undertaken is made up, stating all urgencies. When necessary preservation projects are being proposed. These projects are mainly executed by the institution personnel after professional training and supervised by a preservation consultant.
